Hoojeveen, 1998

Image
I was lucky to visit Lida's mother and see where Lida grew up, in 1998. We visited a house where Lida's family had lived. I think Lida and her sisters grew up there. We visited her mother in Hoojeveen. At that point she was in a nursing home. The mural behind Lida and her Mother show the countryside, famous for peat farming. I think Lida told me that her father had been a peat farmer. Lida with her mother and sister Lini (or Jackie?). 1998.

A subdued evening...1998 on my world trip? or 2001 after 9/11? AT Lida's Rustenburgerstraat flat. You can see my art on the wall behind us. It's an etching about the effect holocaust images had on me. Lida has always had a soft spot for refugees and most of her work (especially before Zen) had been to help them find resources in Amsterdam. When I visited her, we would often eat middle eastern food, she had a lot of middle eastern friends... and her apartment was in a predominantly middle eastern neighborhood.
